Govt contemplating dual passports for girls married to NRIs
In a bid to help women stuck in abusive NRI marriages, the government is contemplating a dual passport system for girls who get married to Non-Resident Indians and migrate abroad with their husbands.
The proposal for the dual passport system has been sent to the external affairs ministry, women and child development minister Krishna Tirath said adding the National Commission for Women has also been asked to prepare a detailed report on such marriages and how to address the issue of abused women in such relationships.

Apart from biting cold weather of the capital, lack of enthusiasm among overseas Indians to buy properties in India has further dampened spirits of some of the realty firms, as well as around half a dozen banks, which put up impressive stalls outside the venue of the recently concluded Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) at Vigyan Bhavan. Of course, realty firms were trying to woo the ‘pravasis’ to buy their products while banks were ready to clear their home loans, then and there. But, both got a rude shock. AS many NRIs have settled abroad, there is need for composite legislation to deal with their legal problems. Parliament should enact a law for NRIs on family matters.

India, the third fastest growing Investor in the US
In the array of fastest growing foreign investors Indians stand at the third position in the US. According to PTI reports a top Obama Administration official has said, acknowledging the positive contribution of India in the US economy at the time of recession. “India is the third fastest growing foreign investor in the US,” said Holly Vineyard, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, at an event here yesterday. Vineyard said Indian investment in 2008 was USD 4.5 billion but the investments in 2009 grew 60 per cent higher than investments in the previous year. He was quoting from a yet to be published report by India US World Affairs Institute and the University of Maryland. The report will soon be released by Congressman, Jim McDermott, Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, at a function organized by the East West Center, a Washington-based think tank.

Twenty-five-year-old Sandeep Kaur of Jangiana village in Barnala district got married to Naveen Kumar, a Canada-based NRI, in January 2007. Her father spent Rs 26 lakh on the wedding, gifted Rs 20 lakh in cash to the groom and paid Rs 1 lakh as commission to the matchmaker. To arrange the cash, Sandeep’s father mortgaged his land. Fifteen days after the wedding, Naveen demanded another Rs 20 lakh. When Sandeep refused, she was sent back home and has not gone back to her husband ever since. Naveen has returned to Canada. Sandeep later came to know that she was Naveen’s fourth wife.

Supreme Court tells government to amend dowry law
The Supreme Court told the government to relook at the anti-dowry law that has been misused by women to file false or exaggerated complaints against husbands and their relatives.
The Bench expressed concern at the rising number of complaints under the dowry law and advised extreme caution when dealing with these complaints.

Welfare fund for NRI workers mooted
If the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has its way, Indian workers abroad will soon have a welfare fund with a sizeable contribution from the country’s insurance companies.
The fund will be utilised for training workers for overseas jobs, for providing humanitarian aid when they are in trouble at their work places and for helping them to resettle on their return.

NRI Scientists win funding in Technology Strategy Board competition for New Approaches to Crop Protection
David Hall and his team at NRI are part of a consortium that is among the winners of funding in the recent competition for New Approaches to Crop Protection run by the UK Technology Strategy Board. The consortium is lead by Berry Gardens Growers Ltd. with Eden Research PLC, Berry World, Sainsbury's, Tozer Seeds Ltd (Plant Solutions), K&S Fumigation Services Ltd and CPM (Retail) Ltd as industrial partners and East Malling Research as the other science partner. The project was one of only 32 selected for funding from several hundred initial applications and was praised for including partners from the whole chain between scientists, growers, marketing bodies and the consumer.

Consumer Affairs Ministry Gives Green Signal to 49 percent FDI in Multi Brand Retail
The Consumer Affairs Ministry has given the green signal to allow 49 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail. It has written a letter to this effect to the Commerce Ministry. India currently allows 100 per cent FDI in cash-and-carry operation and 51 per cent in single-brand retailing. Foreign investors are barred from investing in multi-brand retail. Additionally, the Ministry also sought that a model law be first put in place at the State-level to protect mom-and-pop stores from the impact of the ‘Big Boys' of retail.

MOIA Flooded with NRIs Property Complaints
A real-life version of `Khosla ka ghosla’ is being played out with an increasing number of non-resident Indians (NRIs). Complaints of real estate deals going sour, illegal encroachment and unauthorised occupation of properties have flooded the ministry of overseas Indian affairs (MOIA). In fact, with the recent Satyam scam casting its shadow on Maytas Properties, apprehensions amongst overseas investors has deepened. “Property dispute is one of the most frequent complaints by NRIs. They are unable to protect their property due to long absences or lack of awareness of laws,” Vayalar Ravi, overseas Indian affairs minister, said.
